The town of Begur is located in Catalonia, one of the autonomous communities of Spain with the most peculiar Christmas traditions. Here are the most representative ones that you will come across this winter on the Costa Brava. Do you know any of them?
Christmas fairs
At the end of November, the Christmas markets open their doors in the most emblematic locations in each town. Here you can find all kinds of products, gifts, crafts, flowers, but, above all, Christmas items such as nativity figures, fir trees, sweets and decorative lights, among others. Don’t hesitate to visit the Begur Christmas fair, you won’t regret it.
The "Caganer"
A must in all Catalan nativity scenes. It is a figure in the mangerf, traditionally a peasant, placed in a secluded corner and in the position of defecating. Catalan tradition says that placing this figure in the nativity scene brings luck and joy. Nowadays, figures of popular figures such as politicians or sportsmen are often used as a parody instead of the traditional peasant.
The Chirstmas "Tío"
It is probably the most peculiar tradition of all. It is a magical log that a few days before Christmas Eve knocks on our doors asking for shelter. It has to be covered with a blanket and fed until the night of 24th December, when, after hitting it with a stick, it defecates all kinds of sweets, sweets and presents for the children.

Roscón de reyes (cake of kings)
This is a sweet dough pastry, traditionally filled with cream or cream and decorated with slices of candied fruit on the outside. It is usually eaten as a dessert at dinner on 5 January or at the Kings’ Day meal on 6 January.
Yule log
It is a traditional dessert served during the Christmas holidays. It is made from sponge cake spread with cream and rolled into a cylinder shape. The cream used is usually chocolate, coffee or even praline. Delicious, isn’t it?
Nougat (Turrón)
There are all kinds of varieties of nougat, some of the most popular being Alicante or hard nougat, Jijona or soft nougat and chocolate and almond nougat. In essence, nougat is a sweet dough obtained by cooking sugar or honey and adding almonds. Come and try them at the Begur Christmas fair.
Christmas decorations
