Fira de indians

Year after year, during the first weekend of September, the town of Begur is filled with the indian theme with the celebration of the indians fair. After the success of its first edition in 2004, the fair has been held uninterruptedly and is part of the tradition of Begur.

Dommus Begur will tell you the origin of the fair and everything you need to know to enjoy this incredible festivity. Come and enjoy the Indians fair of Begur in one of our houses, villas and flats, you will not regret it.

The origin of the Indian tradition in begur

During the 19th century, driven by the crisis in the Catalan countryside, many people from Begur emigrated to the island of Cuba in order to make their fortune. Some of them, known as the “Americans“, succeeded in their mission, and later returned to their hometown. After their return, they built ostentatious private mansions and contributed financially to the construction of public works.

The indian influence in Begur

Nowadays, the greatest exponent of the indian influence in the town is its architecture. Begur has numerous buildings with influence of the indian style and a route has even been created to visit the more than 15 that can be found throughout the town. The influence was such, that even the town hall of Begur itself follows this style. In addition to the architecture, the influence of the Cuban way of life embraced other areas of the life of its inhabitants, such as gastronomy and music.

Events of the Indian fair in Begur

The first weekend of September, Begur is transformed with the aim of reviving the historical period of the return of the “Americans”, which has left a deep mark on the appearance of the town and the identity of its inhabitants. During the fair, many activities are programmed: musical performances with Cuban rhythms, havaneres, street shows recreating the Indian period and more.

Most of the events are held in the historic centre of Begur, except for those of a musical nature that take place in the Arbreda park.

The indians market

One of the most successful events is the overseas products market and trade fair. Here you can find both products and demonstrations of typical crafts from the Indian era. Here you can taste such typical Cuban products as coffee, rum, cocoa, spices, and attend some of the demonstrations of crafts such as blacksmithing, pottery, glassblowing and fishing with nets and knots.

The indians fair activities

A wide variety of cultural events are also organised during the festival. Although these tend to vary from year to year, the most frequent are interviews, conferences, documentaries and round tables where the legacy of the “Americans” is analysed and disseminated.

Exhibition of the Indians fair

Every year an exhibition is organised on a theme related to Indian culture, such as the Indian gardens fair held in 2019 or the Indian trades fair in 2017.

This exhibition can be visited on your own, although it is also possible to sign up for one of the guided tours offered in the following languages: Catalan, Spanish, English and French.

At Dommus Begur we offer you everything you need to enjoy the indianos fair in Begur. Come and relax in one of our houses, villas and flats in Begur.
